Question #1 Identify Risk Involved. Examples...

Chemical:  This chemical may cause possible skin, respiratory, and eye irritant.

Biological: This organism may cause cross contamination or be released into the environment

Electrical: Use of electricity may create a short circuit, cause shock, or electrical fire.

Laser: Un-protected eye may result in damge if exposed to Laser light.

Sharp Objects: Risk of cuts laserations or punctures may result in the mis use of sharp objects

Question #2 Safety Precautions and Procedures to Reduce the Risks. Examples...

Chemical: While using (Name the Chemicals), apron, gloves, and goggles will be worn at all times. A lab shower and eye wash station are available incase of chemical spills.

Hot plate, Soldering iron, Burner:  Goggles and aprons will be worn. During heating, tongs or thermal gloves will be used. Heat source will not be left un-attended.

Biological: Researcher will use Aseptic Techniques upon entering the lab. Research will wash hands and arms up to the elbow with antibacterial soap. Before and during experimentation wear rubber gloves, apron, and goggles at all times. Use 10 % bleach solution and wipe down the lab area and tabletop before and after experimentation. The Transfer of any culture will be done with a mechanical pipette. Place a biohazard sign in plain view for all to see near or at the testing site. Before and after use all lab equipment will autoclaved for 30 minutes at 20 psi, 121 degrees Celsius.

Electric: Researcher will limit the use  around water. Never use frayed or cut wires when plugging in a device. Never overload the outlet and use a surge protector or GFI on the outlet.  Shut off and unplug all devices when not in use or when you leave the room unattended.

Laser: Never look directly into the beam of the laser. Limit reflections of the beam off shiny objects. Post a laser sign when working with the laser. Never track people with the laser it is not a toy. Upon finishing with the laser, turn off the laser close the shutter and unplug the devise. Store the laser in a closed locked cabinet.

Sharp Objects: Sharp objects will be capped, covered or stored when not in use.  use caution whenever using the sharp object.

UVA, UVB, and UVC light safety: Limit UV exposure by placing the light source in a solid sealed case. Wear UV protect goggles. Wear personal protection includes aprons and gloves. Never look directly into UV light source. When using UVC, the light and reflection of light must be completely blocked before the unit is turned on. Place a warning sign in the lab area that a UV light source is being used.
 

Question #3 Identify Hazardous, Chemicals, Activities or Organisms. Examples...

Chemical: Name the chemical

Biological: name the Bacterium, Protista, or Mold

Electric:  Name the electrical device.

Laser: A Laser class 1 or 2  will be used in experimentation.

Sharp Objects: Use of needles, razor blades, saw, knife, or scalpel will be used in the project.

 

Question #4 Disposal Procedures Used (when applicable).

Chemical:  Chemicals will be disposed of based on Flinn Scientific catelogue. Give a Brief description.

Biolgical: Petri dishes and disposable lab equipment will be placed in a plastic bag and autoclaved for 30 minutes at 20 psi, 121 degrees Celsius. All placed in a red biohazard bag and picked up  by Stericycle.

Living things: All animals used in experimentation will be donated to the science department at the school for further investigation and education. These animals will be taken care of by the teacher and the attending students in that class. Animals that die during the experriment will be wrapped in newspaper, bagged and disposed of in the trash.
